    Acupuncture is interesting. At my urologist they use acupuncture needles and a tens (spelling?) unit on patients with bladder issues. I can't wait to hear how it turns out for you, but I'll have to hear about it here and not the beach, lol.

    Yeah I'm the same as Benskip55. If there is something major I'm dealing with, I tend to avoid my personal practice like the plague only because the practice is like a mirror inside my soul and makes me confront all the tough stuff. It's very hard...but there's always a period of time where I avoid, and then it's like somehow my body knows when I'm ready to deal with it and I'll start craving getting on the mat for ME. I think the same will happen for you - you just have so much going on right now between YTT and everything. Sending you so much love and strength.

    All in good time. I find that I have a hard time really delving (or even approaching) my personal practice when I have a lot emotionally going on. It's never a conscious thought - but I think subconsciously I just avoid it because I know how the practice works. It makes us really confront ourselves raw and unedited, and sometimes I just can't bear to face it, or even if I think I'm ready, I have a hard time letting my guard down. I'll bet that one day when you least expect it, you will find yourself deep in one of the most authentic practices and then you will be back in the groove. Good for you for recognizing where you are at, and for not giving up. Keep it up.

    Good to know I'm not alone! So interesting to know that the 15 and 60 mins are the most popular vids, too! Thanks for the tip / warning, too, Scott. I mustered enough motivation to go to one of my regular classes yesterday, and, after I admitted to my teacher that I was trying to get back into routine and was a bit scared to come, she said she understood exactly how I felt on feeling embarrassed to show up after taking a break. It's nice to know that we all are human and have the same unfounded fears! Everyone was welcoming - even the staff's dog (who usually runs away from me) liked smelling my shoes and stole my socks in the bathroom.

    This totally reminds me of my first boot camp. My instructor was a former body builder - a woman....in her SIXTIES! She was so muscular and sooooo peppy. I loved her! And, like you, I'd always liked to workout alone. But that class was awesome, and I loved the camaraderie amongst the people. I was sad when we moved away and I lost my boot camp class. I went back to my old ways, which - don't get me wrong - I really did enjoy. But like you, I thought I was pushing myself. And yet I wasn't really seeing results. So I started working with a trainer. I didn't want to at all because I don't like chatting when I'm working out, and I really like listening to my own music. But I felt I really needed this guy's expertise. It wound up being the best thing I've done for myself. In terms of my lifts, he's spotted mistakes I never would've picked out on my own. He pushes me harder than I ever would've pushed myself. And just when I'm about to give up on something, he's super motivating and encouraging and I always finish the workout feeling accomplished...and like I might die, hahaha.

    Long overdue, but, I finally did a home practice today and took these pics just for you. I realized that most instruct the gaze to be toward the sky, but, that is too much for my neck right now (and I had the opportunity to add facial expressions!).

    That's great you all had a good, calming retreat, happy for you. I hope to go on one of those someday. I was thinking of something much longer. But it may be a good idea to start with something shorter. And probably figure out what I am looking for as well!

    I, too have been able to retain that sense of calm - it's pretty magical. So grateful to have had the opportunity to meet you (in real life) as well as all the other amazing ladies. What a trip!

    I did acupuncture for joint pain when I was dealing with Lyme. It really helped!!! But they wanted me to buy a bunch of Chinese herbs and I thought acupuncture was just the needles and they explained it was just a component of it. I didn't want to spend any more money so I didn't do the herbs but did needles themselves did help for a little bit.

    I've been thinking about trying acupuncture for a shoulder injury that acts up every once in a while. Let me know how it goes - I've heard such good things just can't seem to find the time to make an appointment. Funny how that works, eh?

    Robert, I am not sure I understand your question, if you meant it as a question. This is a question I ask myself so I always try to think about what I am doing when I practice. Why am I doing this? Why am I cranking myself into this posture when I know it would be better if I adjusted the posture or used a different posture. Or did something completely different. The same idea as Brenskip wrote. It is not always as easy as it may seem, but I try. Sometimes forcing, mentally forcing not physically forcing, myself to do a posture or set of postures helps me to start working in the direction I need. So that is where the first line may be appropriate.

    Wishing peace to her, and also to you and your family while you heal. I'm glad to hear you sticking with YTT. You maximized the time you could be there with her. I dislike how TV medical dramas and movies make us think we can be right at our loved one's side when he or she finally pass. My mom has tried to do this unsuccessfully for the past 4 times over the past decade but it just doesn't seem realistically possible for a long-term illness.

    Thank you for sharing - I realize it feels so vulnerable to put it out there. I get more clarity when I write, so I hope it has helped you. So many things jumped out at me - randomly quoted above. I was moved to tears when I read this. I was too young to understand how conflicting it was for my mom and her sisters to be caregivers to my grandma in her last years of Alzheimer's. I see her so preoccupied now because her older sisters are going through it, and she's the youngest. Reading about your experience helps me put it more in perspective, especially since our family doesn't talk about feelings! Understanding that just fighting the infection is essentially just keeping her plugged in... that takes such maturity and strength. That's so hard to comprehend when it's someone close to you. I'm so glad you knew that not going to YTT would have been giving away an opportunity that would better serve others, not just yourself. Sending wonderful thoughts to you!

    I'm not one to share really personal stuff either, even though sometimes it's probably good to do so. I've gotten slightly better about revealing my deep feelings but I'm not as open as I should be and my wife reminds me of that from time to time.

    What a roller coaster ride Lorelei! Situations like your mom is facing is so tough. On one hand you want them to be at peace and no longer suffer, but still you know you will miss them so much. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.

    I am feeling for you. Rest. The practice will be there when you are healed! (I sound like a mother...but I am one, so what can I say?!) The time to rest feels like such a waste, I know. BUT! It's for the best. I'm sending you good thoughts. Get cozy and be good to yourself, please.

    So great to hear your experience! I think I would have been offended by the kid at the front desk - why would he think you would not be up for the hardest class?? But, I wasn't there, so that must have been a more conversational tone rather than questioning. Good for you for not being deterred by others.

    Sounds like it's time for you to increase the resistance if you think you can't keep the same pace running outside. I heard just even 1% incline on treadmill will simulate flat terrain while running outside, so, there might be a similar rule of thumb for elliptical?

    I'm going on an international flight tomorrow, so I love all the suggestions! Anyway, NY Times had posted "practicing yoga" on the plane! I think the twist in seat is a good subtle stretch. Enjoy your trip and just remember to breathe deeply. I second the melatonin to try to sleep through the turbulence or watch movies or listen to music to distract yourself.

    Scott, real running.......not necessarily. The elliptical keeps you going at a pace better than running sometimes. All I'm saying is that the "real" comes from our drive, not the vehicle. I used the elliptical for months instead of running last year when I broke a bone in my foot and had some IT band issues at the same time (and a torn calf.....it was a long winter). Anyway, I was afraid that the no running would be the end of me, that I'd gain weight, that I wouldn't get the endorphins going, etc. Well, to be honest, it wasn't the same as running, because I love the outdoors-action that running provides, but other than that? The same. AND, my joints felt better without all the pounding. I think you are a true motivation for so many people. Keep it up, dude. One more thing.....getting your butt to the gym? That takes more effort than stepping outside my door for a quicky run. Don't sell yourself short.

    oh! I'm glad you brought this up, because I nearly topple over when we skip the "easier" variation first and do the opposite leg twist (it's easier for me to think of #2 as left arm on right shin and #1 as left arm on left shin, but I think I translated it correctly, now!). For me, when I do #2, thinking of "scissoring" my legs together helps engage my inner thighs to better balance. But, I still wobble a whole bunch, and, it is so hard for me to rotate / twist! Do people have other suggestions on getting deeper / more grounded in this sequence? On a side note, I would also suggest a variation on the namaste hands that puts less pressure on the wrists is to make a fist with the bottom hand and cover it with the top arm. However, need to make sure the fist and wrist are aligned, not bent. I was still pushing my fist perpendicular to my arm until my teacher pointed it out, so, another place to be mindful about for me!

    What a great discovery and beautiful post! I think some progress is too subtle to capture in photos - e.g. if you were getting more grounded, it showed up in your headstand, not in your mermaid! I believe your mermaid is benefiting from that progress, just not visually. You're an inspiration - you didn't force yourself to practice on the days you were tired and did stuff that was still for you (knit and reading) during the free time. After reading all the real life stuff that cropped up, I have no idea how you still had free moments. It must be all that discipline from your marathon training - you make that time for yourself!

    One of the hardest things for me is letting myself fully rest on a rest day. I always want to DO something just to feel like I've been productive but in the last few months I've realized that the more I let myself rest, the more improvement I see in things I've focusing on when I step back on the mat or into the gym or whatever it is I'm trying to do. It's definitely taken me a long time to find a balance but it sounds like you're on the right track! <3

    You are really working. Good for you. I tend to get a little obsessed with an exercise schedule. I think it comes from marathon training and other long-term high endurance events. Lately, I'm trying to listen more to my body and to not stress if I can't get in my run on the day I wanted or if I only have 20 minutes for yoga practice instead of the 45 for which I'd hoped. I love that a "rest day" is worked in so that I don't let the guilts get to me if I skip.

    I love that the concert was a fun experience for you and that you were able to just LET GO! It's hard to do that as a grown up, isn't it? Good for you! I'm sure the day of fun did so much for you. Living in the moment at its best.

    I wouldn’t be inclined to interact with your doctor on too much of a personal level, and certainly don't force it. It may well have been that they where in the class to relax (doctors are typically very busy), or as an experiment/research. Also the unconscious use of ujjayi breathing may or may not be a good idea. Always breathing with the glottis restricted would restrict your airflow, increasing the loading on the respiratory system. I do not know what impact that could have long-term, although I doubt that the lungs where 'designed'(evolved) with that intent.

    I bought a pair of blocks and a strap last night. I think they will really help with some of the poses that my poor flexibility causes problems with. My doctor knows I'm doing yoga and she's very excited for me. I would talk to her about it during a visit, but maybe not during the moment of certain embarrassing exams.

    Yay! Love that you not only did this but are using the photos to check your alignment - that's why I am so pro-photos. Haha, and it cracked me up that you used a cooling rack - I can give you a huge laundry list of strange things I've used to prop up my phone!!!! Looking forward to seeing your progress!
