I am still working with improving my flexibility and there are days that I feel like I am going backwards because I was sore from a couple of days before (I since invested in a foam roller for my hamstrings and that has helped A LOT with recovering)  Forward fold is one of my poses for this month's challenge and I would only know that I had made progress from taking pics (it wasn't much but it was something).  I too have no friends locally that practice yoga and I am a little scared to step into a class.  I have made a little area in my house to practice my yoga and just follow along with the month's challenge schedule which helps me stay consistent with my practice.  Some days can be challenging, I could have a lot on my mind and might even be stressing about a situation at work without even realizing it.  It has always been a little difficult to let "thoughts go by like a cloud in the sky"...I love that expression BTW...but recently it has been going well and being able to keep a clear head has opened so much more.  So this month I am working on dancer's pose and forward fold, there has been progress because it seems like lately I have been having daily victories in my practice that I wasn't not even working towards because I didn't think I was there yet.  Like jumping/floating to the front of the mat from downward dog instead of stepping forward I was never able to control that and then just one day I did and I was so excited and whenever that part comes up in the practice I just smile to myself that I can do that now.

Ok I think that was enough rambling and I hope that all made sense.  I hope this was helpful

OK, I just got a Fitbit Charge HR last week (the one with the heart rate sensor) and today was the first time I wore it during a 1.5 hour yoga class.  It tracked barely any steps during class and didn't log my movement as exercise.  I turned on the exercise mode to more accurately track my heart rate, but my heart rate never even reached the "fat burning" zone, so FitBit did not log it as a workout.

So, a fitness track is not going to do anything for yoga practice I think, unless you are doing a lot of vinyasa flow.  For a more hatha based class, like the one I took, I suspect all the ujayii breathing helps regulate the heart rate.  The highest my heart rate went was 71 bpm during sun salutations while my resting heart rate is 52 bpm. I was jogging to class because I was running late, and then speed walking back home to make some traffic lights, and you can see those spikes reach my cardio and fat burn zone, but yoga never came anywhere close.  So, it's good to wear all the time because walking is a lot healthier for you than you realize, but don't expect it to measure your yoga practice.

However, since the Fitbit is tracking heart rate, it can still estimate how many calories are burned, if that is important to you.  Check out the bottom "Activity History" and see how many calories I burned for 1.5 hour yoga session, and see the June 20th activity where I went for a 20 minute run.  Yoga is not just for body, it's also for the mind, and no technology can track that for you!

Overall, I love the FitBit so far for tracking my sleep, how many flights of stairs I walk (because of hills!), and tracking my runs because it reflected that I hit my peak heart rate when I started getting out of breath, and then went down to cardio rate when I eased up on my running pace.  But not for tracking my yoga practice!

I just tried THE BEST foam roller http://rumbleroller.com/foam-rollers.html . I had some IT/Hip pain that was just not going away (my yoga practice has slowed down recently w/ all my kids Spring activities and trying to sell our house. I had an immediately quick burst of pain and then after about 3 rolls, my hip felt incredibly better. I'm going to buy the smaller one the next time I get a good Dicks sporting goods coupon

Thanks for your input, friends! I've decided to take my business elsewhere. I will write him an email letting him know why I won't be ordering from him because who knows, maybe he doesn't even realize he is being so rude. Since this will be a product I need over and over again, I'll take the lesser product for this first time around just to meet my deadline and then I'll be able to hopefully find another company that makes a high quality product with excellent customer service. Whew.

Posting a little late... here is my final progress for the May Project!

This month I have managed to do a lot of poses that seemed impossible and I'm very happy and satisfied with myself!!
I now have a solid headstand in which I can comfortably play with variations, a stable Crow which has a lot of room for improving though, a nice Mermaid variation in Dancer's pose and also some of my favourites, like Sugar Cane pose and Baby Flying Pigeon. And also I'm thrilled to have in my practice all the rest of the poses that you'll see below like Tripod Headstand, Forearm Stand (away from the wall finally!!!), 8-Angle pose, Baby Crow, in which I'm at the beginning of trying and looking forward to making them better and more solid by day! I can't even describe my happiness in my first flipped grip try in Dancer's pose (even with my bath towel belt used as a yoga strap)!

However the real credit is on Candace, because without her help nothing of this would be possible! So thank you once more!

P.S.: Yoga Selfie overload coming your way....!! hahaha!

Hi Candace! I know you are not certified in prenatal yoga, but hopefully this question is still answerable.

I am in my first trimester, and I am definitely still feeling good enough to keep up my regular practice. I have found appropriate modifications for many common asanas that I'm not comfortable with (e.g. supported bridge for wheel, modified cobra for upward-facing dog), but I'm really mystified about what to do instead of deep twists.

I don't feel comfortable doing ANY kind of deep abdominal twists--I'm sure it wouldn't hurt the baby, but it just physically doesn't feel great. So when I've been doing videos with twists, I've just been sitting or lying in place! Can you think of a couple of things I could do instead of a deep twist other than just standing or lying there?

    Thanks!!

    Hi YBCers,
I went ahead and activated the live chat tab at the index of the forum page. If you find yourself online at the same time as other members, it can be a quicker and more efficient way to hold a conversation with one another. A few people had requested the feature and we are happy to have it.

Clicking on the "Chat" tab just below the YBC logo with automatically enter you into the chat room. Once you have entered you can simply join the conversation. There is a button to the right of the page that also allows you to move the chat room into a separate window that will make it convenient to continue chatting live and surf the forum at the same time.

If you want to leave the chat but stay on the forum, be sure the click the "leave chat" button on the right side of the chat page.

This forum host does have a live chat tab that I can add to the forum. I had taken it down from the start of the forum because we were not sure if it would be used. Since the start of the forum, there have not been a lot of members on at the website at the same time to take advantage of the service. But now that the forum has grown, maybe it is something that can be utilized. I will look into bringing it back and if any other members read this and would like this feature, please respond and let me know so we can be sure there is a demand for this. Thanks.

You might not be considering the apple watch, but Larry mentioned his here:

My husband has a fitbit charge, so I can comment on that.  Please note I have no idea what features the devices have, so I can't compare functionality. Also, unfortunately my husband doesn't do yoga, but, since we do other walking activities together, I can comment on some of the neat aspects that I get from association!

The FitBit charge is extremely useful for the heart rate component, and it tracks his sleep activity automatically (instead of having to activate it manually with the fitbit one). If you get the other fitbit versions without heart rate (e.g. fitbit one is very discreet as a clip), I don't think you'll be measuring much during your yoga practice since it mainly measures steps.

The other good part about measuring heart rate is that it can calculate how many calories you burn automatically. You can see it in the screenshot below under workout summary.  Note he is doing more cardio than yoga (basketball, and running back from lunch).

The altimeter is fun if you live in a place that is hilly - yesterday we walked across town and back - 81 floors, 18,000 steps!  If you don't wear it all the time, then you won't measure all your steps that day and might not hit your goal, but all it will show up is as a gap in time when you look at it online.  I suppose as long as you have a heart rate measurement, then you only need to wear it during workouts, but, it's pretty interesting to see how low your resting heart rate can go and track your sleep activity.

Also, consider which device you may have more friends on. My husband is in friendly competition with his friends - the ranking on the right hand column shows total steps for the past week.

    Good luck in your search!

I saw this topic discussion and was so excited to share my finds! I love supporting small yoga companies that are just starting out and made in the USA!

Valleau Apparel - Small online active wear company based in San Diego. Tons of super cute sports bras with really flattering straps!! My go to for sports bras, plus they are slightly cheaper than Lulu! They also offer free shipping for any order over $100, even internationally!

Om Shanti - This small company is based out of Miami and they are awesome leggings!!! I'm definitely a Teeki lover, but these leggings stand out even more! They have awesome prints like purple lightning and sandstone! It's pretty safe to say I'm obsessed! These are a little pricey, but if you can save up enough to buy a pair you won't be disappointed.

I have definitely been experiencing bruises on my triceps from my knees (really random but if anyone asks me when they are see them I am not sure if they are convinced that it happened while I was doing yoga, they might just think I am crazy )   Crow pose is definitely new to me during this May challenge and I am still finding my place, engaging my core and putting most of my weight on my hands through my arms from my shoulders and not putting most of my weight through my legs to my triceps to my hands.  Which I believe I need to be moving my weight forward.  While I am working on establishing more core strength I have been placing my knees on the outside of my triceps and squeezing in and pushing out from my shoulders until I feel like my knees are feeling lighter on my arms.

I have to say I am so excited.. It's only day 14 and I missed some days with 5 de mayo and moms day and all. But today I went into handstand and didn't tiuch the wall and stayed up for a breath!!!! and then during my practice I switched hold on king dancer and didn't loose balance ! Huge things for me.. I really feel way stronger so rapidly?! and man my core after all this boat practice :0

For the win!!  Last night was the first time that I successfully got into supported headstand without touching the wall!  I've been scooting back a little bit from the wall this week so I can really push myself and I did it!  No kicking, no wobbling, it was awesome.  Another extra-special aspect is that I went up into it on my "off" leg.  Thank you thank you thank you Candace for providing these challenges!  I don't think that I would've pushed myself this hard without a schedule encouraging me to go farther and work harder.

Here I am too with my progress from the May project! I have my mother visiting these days so I don't practice as much as usually! I'm a few days behind, but I've already seen a bit of progress!!
I chose again more than one poses and they are Crow, Forearm Stand (and maybe try Scorpion) and also Baby Grasshopper, which I would like to turn to Grasshopper but I have no idea how to get to the pose! hahaha!! I also chose a pose that is not on the list Candace proposed, but is one I always liked and always failed to do... the Eight-angle pose, which I finally tried to take off the ground yesterday!!

Don't laugh at my "Scorpion pose" Candace... it's my first try ever and I hope that one day I make as much progress as you have done!!
