  1. That's an interesting question. It depends on your beliefs. The better question is, "Should Christians practice yoga?" And that question is deeply personal and that is a conversation you should have with yourself. As a Catholic, I've had the conversation and basically said, "It's more a conversation with God." I don't use Hatha beads when I meditate if I meditate out of the shower; I use a rosary instead. 

    However, if you are curious and wish to have more to think upon, here are two articles answering "Should Christians practice yoga?":

  2. I haven't had sacroiliitis, but I have hurt that area from a really rough ride before. I know you've seen a chiropractor, but have you done deep tissue massage? Sometimes the inflammation in the joint can't release because of the tight muscles, so you have to work on the muscles and fascia surrounding it before you can get to the joint.  A PT should give you a great set of exercises to help you though. 

  3. I use just a regular ol' throw pillow from Target for both. The Threshold ones are particularly nice. If my back hurts, I grab a throw pillow and stick it behind me and that typically solves things (I have pretty mild scoliosis due to my hips being uneven. I can't really fix it.) They are quite well made and firm and good for my back.

    In terms of meditation, I use a old VCR tape so my back doesn't go out of position. Or, if I'm feeling particularly challenged, an exercise/posture/PT ball. I use both an exercise ball at my desk and for exercise. Most times lumbar pain is caused by bad posture and/or weak abdominal muscles (as my chiropractor is always chiding me for.) Sitting on a big exercise ball forces you to use your core to stay on it. Mine is 53" which is good because, well, I'm particularly small.

  4. That's a beautiful sculpture. When I was in ballet, this was a stretch we were taught to stretch out our hips and legs. I'm not as flexible as I once was and I still find this a nice stretch after horseback riding.

    Sooooooooooo, what's good for a certain goose isn't good for some ganders? For example,  I stretch out my Achilles' tendons by wearing my boots and then suspending myself by the balls of my feet over a stair before I mount a horse. Do yogis do this? I've yet to find one that says they do. Do equestrians do it? It's our bread and butter in terms of stretches.

  5. @Hildegard I love bullet journaling. Mine is a bullet + scrapbook kind of a deal. I put ticket stubs, pretty flowers I've dried, interesting bits of articles (or I just end up stapling the whole article in the case of my NFP getting into the New York Times!) and other neat diddies in mine. Mine is really the representation of my brain. Wandering, full of pretty things, yet somehow organized.

  6. @Hildegard Thank you. It's been hard but I keep on trucking. I'm still really anxious about going through my closet and trying things on to see if they still fit. I know there are definitely things that won't, some of those things may be things that I really love and won't be able to transform into something else that would fit me like a skirt (if it's a dress), but I know I'll have to face that. So stressful.

  7. HA HA @yogadk. We are all different! I know it's possible to wear thongs and do horseback riding, but my brain can't wrap around it. I like my tuches covered; you like thongs. You could say we're the inverse of each other like the Sassy and Sasha at my NFP. Sasha is a painted pony that's predominately chestnut with white splashes; Sassy is a horse that is the inverse - white with brown splashes. Sasha loves to be pet; Sassy is a little sassy. 

    Oh good lordy, I'm speaking horse now.....

  8. I keep forgetting to update to put this, but I thought you guys would like to see a physical picture of how much I've changed over the past year and 3 months. This all from going to therapy (I was doing trauma therapy really for the first six months before stepping down gradually), yoga and the horse lessons. The first picture was me near my absolute lowest weight ever, the middle is about half way there, and the one on the right was taken on Friday. I don't go on a scale often (I try to limit it to once every two weeks so I don't obsess), but Friday is me back to my original weight from 2 years ago. You can see most of the change in my face and arms.

  9. @HGB I love them. I like that one side of the support is slightly bigger so that's the side that's goes on your upper thigh. They mold very well. I don't know what it is, but I can't find things for regular people that work well; the best things I've found are for equestrians (my favorite ice packs are for equestrians too.)

    Sorry for my nice bruised up legs (horses, they love to give ya bruises), but yea, here's how lovely they are. I live in them on Wednesdays.

  10. @HGB Personally 1 and 3 look the most comfortable. #2 looks rather uncomfortable to me for some reason. If they are comfy for you, wear them! I'm not the kind to really care about what people are thinking when I'm exercising. All of my stuff matches in some bizarre way, so it doesn't really matter. I'm quite a simple soul with my gear...until we get to equestrian gear. Then I'm picky.

  11. @LarryD517 I'm with you. I tuck it in. When you ride a horse, it's imperative you tuck in your shirt. If you were to fall, a loose shirt could get caught in the stirrups (or reins) and you could get dragged (uh, ow?) Sometimes loose shirts spook horses or some enterprising, naughty horse will grab onto it to get your attention. Exercise = shirt tucked into breeches/tights/exercise pants/etc.

    @HGB  For knee support, I like Rambo knee supports. Again, equestrian stuff, but they are the only things to fully get this lupus girls' knees unswollen after an intense horse lesson. Some equestrian's I know prefer the Back on Track Knee Supports. You can probably find them a tiny bit cheaper on Amazon, but I practically live at the Dover Saddlery store, so I gave you that link.

  12. My dad (a kayaker) relies on Under Armour shirts and compression tights/shorts (I can't remember if it's shorts or tights. I'm not going to dig through his drawers) when he's kayaking. I'm not sure if it'll with yoga, but the compression keeps circulation going when he kayaks. I wear Champion gear which I think they also do a men's line?

    If you don't mind spending a little more and want pockets, consider looking into men's equestrian tights. Equestrian tights come with good compression, often have two pockets on each outer thigh, come double crotched (the beauty of those suckers, I tell ye) and are made in fabrics that don't freaking hold sweat because, yea, horses. The only downfall to them is breeches/tights often come with suede inner knee patches so an equestrian's thighs/knees aren't rubbed raw from the saddle. Here's a good option for men that is fashionable and has a pocket:


    You know, I kind of want the women's version of this...NO. NO. I don't need anymore riding tights. Step away from the computer Katie. Step awaaaaaaaaaaaay.

  13. I've never had a super long break, but sometimes I need a day or two off. Whether it's a migraine or I just have too much pain that day, you have to go by you. When I return to it, my brain says, "YOU MISSED A DAY! WHY DID YOU MISS A DAY! Look at all the feels in yo body!" and it can be really frustrating or even anxiety-producing. I simply cannot do hip openers or something like a vinyasa on skipped days; I get too frustrated. I work on something that releases frustration like yoga focusing in on the core/abs. I'm weak there so I get so tired I can't think. I kind of "ease" back in that way by focusing in on something that makes me too tired too think. Then I can do full body yoga again or just focus on my hips if it's a Wednesday.

I'm the kind that can eat just about anytime before yoga and be fine (fast metabolism); however, I do feel a little nauseous if I've eaten a big meal 30 minutes of yoga, especially if I had, oh I don't know, two bowls of Lucky Charms cereal. That makes me feel a little ill. Lots of water for when I do longer than 10-15 minute yoga sessions.

    When it's hot, I often find that after a yoga session, I may not feel especially thirsty, but hungry and I'll go downstairs and get a fruit puree popsicle (like Outshine Grape, Strawberry Kiwi, Raspberry, etc. popsicles. Those are my favorite.) I get hydrated but I get some kind of food too. Are they as nutritious as homemade ones? No, but I tend to gag when I can taste the texture of many fruits, so puree popsicles are kind of my jam.

  15. @Colleen That's great that the owners knew a few places she could go! It's hard when you know that something is working for you, but you're in the wrong venue but don't know where to go. Like @afriske, I did trauma therapy for a while alongside yoga and therapeutic horse riding lessons. I'm now down to regular therapy, stepped out of therapeutic riding into horse lessons but yoga remains a constant. 

    It's very distressing when you are the teacher and you know a client is in the wrong environment but have no idea how to help, I'm sure.

  16. I've gotten fairly regular in my practice, practicing everyday, but I've been noticing my right shoulder are beginning to hurt. Last year, I had tendonitis and bursitis in them and I have slight hypermobility in the right shoulder; I can bring my right arm all the way down in my back past shoulder blades in cow face pose (I'm sure you're not supposed to do that.) It's a problem as last year I got a steroid shot in my left shoulder which, effectively, kind of solved the issue in my left shoulder. I'd rather not get a shot in my right shoulder.

  17. While I can't yet do these specific poses, I do suffer from charley horses. Charley horse is an uncontrolled spasm and, for me, often a sign I'm not yet ready for a pose or I overworked that particular muscle/muscle group. Often, the best method for me is taking the pose in stages or  I use a roller or my hands to massage the spasm out. If you ever seen those Eos lip balms (or the knock offs), they are great for myofascial pain like Charley Horses. My mom hated the lip balm, so I took out the guts (it smelled horrible), washed it in the dishwasher, and use it to target areas like glutes, quads, my shoulders, biceps....it hurts but you feel so good after because that muscle was inflamed. Tennis balls are good for rubbing out inflammation as well, but my favorites cheap hacks so far for getting inflammation or spasms out are rolling pins (if you have one at home, that is), Eos lip balms, and spoons!

  18. I'm not a teacher, but here's my thoughts. I don't suffer from PTSD, but I do suffer from some trauma (and bad anxiety) that comes up. I do yoga at home because sometimes the anxiety from a trauma can come up and I need a moment to recalibrate, to come back. I have to sometimes come out of a pose and just breathe for a few minutes or even take a moment to write it down.

    @yogafire's idea is really great! With private lessons, she won't be disturbing people, but you can ask her if a pose really bothers her or slowly pull her out if you see her go into a flashback. Those are some of the worst things I've had to see my dad go through and I've had to learn how to help him through them (he has very few of them now.)

    Also, I get very angry at therapists who say that and it's probably why it took me so long to seek treatment. The ones that make me angrier are the ones that don't listen!

  19. @Hildegard I think you're misinterpreting the visual thing. For example, if I had to remember the word "dog" (we'll keep it simple), I would use a simple picture of a dog. Dog = dog. The root aqu (water) = a raindrop. The root word "man" means "hand" so a hand for "man" so "manhandle" for me is a the image of a hand and a door handle because that's what I think of when you say "handle."

    If you've ever read His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, my brain sort of works like the Golden Compass. It's all images, but many images might have multiple meanings. It's when I read that I'm able to combine and create the right meaning.

    Interestingly, I find the brain interesting (not that I'd go and become a neurologist. No. Not that interested.) The brain isn't nearly as explored as the heart or other organs, so much of it is mysterious.

  20. *gasps* They just told you this two weeks before school?! Yoga is such a great idea for high school students as I remember how much stress I had as a high school student, but only two weeks to get a curriculum for yoga plus being not qualified for it?! Oie vey.

    Will you have the budget to bring a qualified yoga instructor in? If so, I would interview yoga instructors that would be available to come in and teach yoga; otherwise, you may be in over your head. You may have to say, "Sorry, I can't do teach yoga. I don't feel confident teaching it. I'm not qualified to teach this and I don't want to injure students by having them do a position improperly."

  21. @Hildegard My story mimics a lot of people with Autism in the 80s/90s. I was originally diagnosed when I was 3.5 years old as "moderate Autism with mild to moderate mental retardation." My mom laughed in his face and stormed out. My regular doctor, at the time, threw the diagnosis out and gave me the diagnosis of ADD, thus prescribing Ritalin (which did nothing except make me a little more temperamental.) I was taken off Ritalin when I was eight and I was put on a strong mood stabilizer when I was 10 called Lithobid which made me either a robot or a monster. I was put on many SSRIs too, but it was being put off the Lithobid (which is actually toxic to your system) and staying on my NSRI (called Cymbalta) that made me (as my mom puts it) "human." I'm on a "mood stabilizer" now, but it's for my seizures/migraines. It doesn't really affect me as a person. I was rediagnosed with HF Autism when I was 22 from the Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health (now Amita Health.) The testing took eight grueling hours. So, ADD/HF Autism (Aspies) misinterpretation is something I'm pretty familiar with.

    Have you ever tried playing games to memorize things? My short term memory is a bunch of crap (you can't make me remember an appointment for crap, but I can remember a conversation word-for-word from a year ago), so I have had to make up games to help memorize for tests. I've done jumping rope and taken the beat to a way to memorize or given every vocab word a picture and memorized them via picture. I'm very pictorial (I'm an image-based autistic) so basing anything on images helps but for math I need to set it to music or beats as math is hard to set to an image. A jumping rope, a rhythm you set to your feet that you can silently repeat to yourself when you're sitting doing your test, a song you'd never forget, hoofbeats....easy ways I've found to memorize without forgetting anything! Some people find that making your brain sort of a internal RPG and making each subject a level that your love and the questions/answers treasure boxes/items have helped (that's too much for me.)

  22. It could be they are protesting the stretch. This sounds really freaking odd, but I learned this at a seminar with a coach who trains rider to ride with no pain (and you use your hamstrings an awful lot!), try poking the hamstrings at your sitting bones with your index finger (or your first two fingers) a few times. It is going to hurt like the devil, but you may feel them relax a little.
