I came across Dharma Yoga Wheel on IG and I think it could really be helpful in my practice.  It is (i feel) a pretty expensive investment, if I'm to go through with it. Does anyone have one? Had experience with one? Knows someone who does have one? I would like input something aside from their testimonials and such.

I love the pigeon pose and have started working on sitting in some hip openers for 30 seconds to a minute. I have only been able to participate in the January challenge. I was about 2 weeks into the flexibility challenge on my own before the new year. I am feeling pretty comfortable in my crow and have been coming back to it every day so far since the end of the challenge. I am also just trying out other poses like the 8 angle, grasshopper, flying pigeon and working on them.

Since finding my crow during the strength challenge this past month, I want to open myself up to more arm balances (8 angle pose, flying crow, grasshopper/baby grasshopper, etc). However, I am not finding that I have the strength to lift myself more than a teeeeny sliver off the floor. What suggestions do you have for poses, advice, routines, things to focus on? Check me out on IG @mwall4 so you can see my poses.

Also, I want to work on opening my hips and I thought some Yin Yoga would be good because the slow pace would really give my hips time to relax and open up. Any videos or suggested poses to use?

mmosier71, your crow pose is totally getting there! Make sure to really engage your core and imagine that, as you are engaging your core, it's helping you lift your feet up closer to your bum. Try to get your knees as high up on the back of your arms as much as you can. Really press into the mat, look forward and lean forward. Be brave and don't worry about falling over; I had to fall over A LOT before I got to fly haha!

Keep working on core and upper body strength to get into more of the arm balances. And if you keep practicing your crow consistently, you'll get to the others soon!

I have pretty tight hips too (they used to be even tighter from all the running around when I was younger and before I consistently started practicing yoga!) and I used to absolutely loathe pigeon pose! Making friends with that pose and its variations has really helped. I'm also a big fan of happy baby, fire logs pose and supta gomukhasana. Standing pigeon also feels really good. High lunge can be a good hip opener as well if you really engage the back leg and try to push the heel back towards the ground (does that make sense?). Candace posted a 15 minute morning practice for hips a few weeks ago too! I hope this helps! =)

Oh, you're going to have all kinds of fun. I got my crow a few months ago and I found 8 angle pose and baby grasshopper followed pretty quickly Are you doing Candace's challenges? I'm always surprised at how quickly I progress at a number of poses, and not just my chosen pose, just within that month of following the recommended videos

My hips aren't great so I'm a fair way off grasshopper, but around half way through the January challenge I at least had my foot above my elbow at some point, I'm hoping to try again with the February challenge on top of the pose I pick.

Update: I have been able to kick up into the headstand

check me out on instagram @mwall4
Working on my Crow pose now more so than the headstand (I feel pretty good about it)

I can't seem to get my wrists/hands positioned right in crow. The left hand always seems to kick out to the side and it kills my wrist. Would using a strap help? To keep my elbows in line? (I think that might be my problem)

Thanks for the advice! And I'm glad I'm not the only one who makes my husband come running. LOL After my first crash trying to do the forearms stand he came running cause he thought I'd hurt myself or something fell...well it had (me) lol.

So since having started yoga a little over a month ago, my overall goal is inversions (mostly the forearm stands). I just find them beautiful and challenging. Obviously since then I have discovered many smaller goals along the way (flexibility in hamstrings, hip flexors, chest opening, and others). However before I fully end my practice for the day I always go back to trying to get myself in a forearm stand. Just to get my feet off the ground and upside down just for a second (cause at the moment I can't stabilize for more) just to see what it feels like. I have improved! But what I have found is when I do get myself up there for longer than a second or 2 (after several failed attempts before) I start to lose my focus. I lose focus because I simply get excited! Like OMG YES!!! annnnd then I lose my stability and fall.

Does this happen to anyone else? Losing focus for sheer excitement/amazement at what you've done? Any tips to help with keeping my focus and trying to push that to the side?

I literally stumbled onto the yoga scene a couple of years ago. Bottom line is that right now yoga and Tai Chi are the only 'exercises' my doc will allow me to do.

Sounds crazy but a wicked injury and auto immune issues have pretty much destroyed the last 5 years of my life. I'm physically allregic to exercise, lol.

I do yoga because it allows me to be active without doing damage.

And it gives me something that's mine.

One sad day I found I couldn't touch my toes, not only my toes but my shins.  Stiffness had snuck up as stealthily as the years.  I was in my mid-fifties and didn't want to be consigned to the stout matronly-figured trash heap just yet.  Remembered a class I'd taken in my 30's.  The instructor was 80 years old and could wrap her feet behind her head.  Not only that but she hadn't taken up yoga until she was 50.  Unfortunately I wasn't ready for yoga then so I didn't pursue it but standing there with my hands reaching ineffectually for those toes I remembered.  If she could do it why not I?

Well, so I'm not wrapping my feet behind my ears but I do do a mean headstand.  Happily yoga isn't just about the asanas.  As so many others have said, it starts to permeate the rest of ones life.  The attempts at meditation have been most instructive.  The inner chatter, the continuous inner chatte,r is so exhausting.  I hadn't realised how little breathing space I give myself.  Although I am not *good* at meditating, regular practice has made me far more mindful and observant of the workings of my mind.  I am better at stopping the loop of endless memory reruns as well as anticipating what might happen while missing what actually IS happening right NOW.

Oh, and I have a firmer butt.

Amen to that!  My husband keeps urging me to take up running, or jogging, anything really that is slightly faster than a brisk walk, but I just can't bring myself to enjoy it.  My knees and ankles pounding together as I hit the ground makes me feel like I will damage the turf or that it will damage me!

Saying that, I once got my husband to follow one of Candace's videos and he was cursing under his breath as he tried to stay in the extended side angle pose!  He's not as tough as he thinks he is, despite playing basketball and jogging twice a week.  I know it's not a competition but when he saw that I could stay in those poses longer than he could, I think he saw me in a different light.

It'll come on its own as you get more used to hovering, so feel free to get excited about your progress because you'll get calmer over time.

I saw someone who was able to achieve her arm balance describe that she felt "intense mental stillness". That's the best way to reflect how I felt too my first time in supported headstand.  Time felt like it froze, and instead of falling over, I finally figured out how to push down with my arms to balance and stayed there for 10-20 seconds.

Good luck! And have fun in the process. My teacher paraphrased a sutra yesterday, "Today you try, and try again, and then you let go of whatever the outcome was."

I started at the end of November 2014. I was always interested in yoga, seeing all the slender, bendy, flexible people contorting themselves into a human pretzel actually appealed to me somehow. What really gets to me is the beauty of the body in this movement and the balance and strength that it takes in inversions. As an artist I felt the need to not only witness it but to be a PART of it.

I also had thought about it as a method of weightloss. I've tried gym and I lose my motivation. I would love to do more with my diet....but chose not to due to my husband(he's super picky). And doing crazy workout exercises just don't appeal to me. The thought of getting super sweaty and feeling like your heart is going to explode and you are just punishing yourself....yeah, not for me.

    But, yoga...Yoga... YOGA!

I just love it! I get done with a session (for example the 31 Strength Challenge) and I still want to do more! Yet, after 3 minutes of crunches, jumping jacks, etc and I want to just roll over and die.

I have (in only a month) definitely noticed a difference in the way I carry myself. I am more mindful of what is around me, what I do, what I eat. Not only is it strengthening me physically but it is doing a fantastic job mentally! I have been doing a daily practice anywhere from 15-40 minutes at home practicing with videos. Living out in the boondocks of Northeast PA means not many classes around to choose from. There is a hot yoga class but the times just never work out for me. I turned to pinterest at first and then discovered Yoga by Adrienne (she babbled too much for my taste) and then stumbled upon YBC (JACKPOT!). I have tried Tara Stiles but find that her music in the videos distracts me. I like the option of just listening to the voice and having the choice of music if I choose.

Anyway... long story short, I started for exercise and I do it because I love it!

I love the pigeon and the 3 legged dog pose they both make me feel so bendy and graceful. I always light right up when I hear Candace's voice saying 3 legged dog or pigeon. I have yet to be able to get into a lot of the inversions but I'm working on it and I think that when I can there's no way you will get me right side up again!
